When you’re gearing up for backcountry hunts, ensuring your pack fits correctly is essential for carrying heavy loads comfortably and efficiently. This guide will walk you through how to properly fit your hunting pack step by step so you can focus on the hunt, not your gear.
Step 1: Load the Pack
Start by adding 25 to 30 pounds of weight to your pack to simulate a realistic load. We recommend using sandbags or other dense materials. Place the weight securely on the load shelf of your pack frame, ensuring it’s centered and stable. Adjust the straps to ensure the weight sits no lower than the top of the hip belt. Buckle everything securely—including the top and side straps—to maintain even weight distribution.
Step 2: Prepare the Pack for Adjustment
Before putting on your pack, loosen all straps, including:

Load lifters

Shoulder straps

Hip belt
Starting with loose straps ensures you can dial in the perfect fit.
Step 3: Position the Hip Belt

Put on the pack, get into an athletic stance, and shrug your shoulders.

Position the hip belt so the padded wings sit directly over the points of your hips. Your hip bones should align with the center of the hip belt pads.

Tighten the hip belt snugly. It should be tight enough to stay in place without cutting off circulation or causing discomfort. Proper hip belt placement is key as you want the majority of the load carried on your hips rather than your shoulders.
Step 4: Adjust the Shoulder Straps

Pull the shoulder straps snug to bring the pack frame close to your body, making consistent contact all the way around the tops of the shoulders.

Secure the sternum strap, but avoid overtightening. The shoulder straps should sit naturally in the pockets of your shoulders without creating pressure on your chest cavity. This positioning prevents restricted breathing during long hauls and keeps the straps from sliding out of place.
Step 5: Tighten the Load Lifters

Gradually tighten the load lifters until you feel the pack’s weight shift off your shoulders and onto your hips. This also secures the weight firmly and in close proximity to your back.

Aim for a 30-45-degree angle on the load lifters. This ensures optimal load transfer without excessive pressure on your shoulders.
Step 6: Evaluate the Fit
Once all straps are adjusted, evaluate the fit:

The hip belt should sit comfortably and securely on your hips.

The shoulder straps should feel snug but not overly tight, with enough room to slide two fingers underneath without much effort.

Load lifters should create a comfortable 30-45-degree angle.
Step 7: Not quite right? Adjust the Torso Length (If Needed)
If the fit isn’t quite right, adjust the torso length using your pack’s three-point locking system:

Remove the pack and locate the three-point locking system:

Shoulder straps secured to Velcro on the frame

Vertical support strap threading through the frame

Horizontal strap threading through the rear frame and securing with Velcro

Loosen two of the locking points to adjust the shoulder harness.

Retighten the straps, ensuring the adjustments hold securely.

Repeat the fitting process from Steps 3 through 6.
Final Fit Check
Put the pack back on and run through the adjustment process again:

Tighten the hip belt by pulling the straps forward.

Secure the shoulder straps and sternum strap.

Adjust the load lifters for ideal weight distribution.
Turn to the side and check the angles and strap placements. If everything is set correctly, the majority of the load will rest on your hips, and the pack will feel stable and balanced.
